Turning Toward the Light

The Wisdom of Sunflowers

Last spring, as the desert warmed and life stretched toward the sun, I paused one day to admire Jeff’s sunflower patch. These weren’t ordinary sunflowers. They stood over eight feet tall—their thin stalks and sparse blooms swaying gently in the breeze. But as I looked closer, I noticed something remarkable.

Some of the stalks had broken—some near the base, others halfway up—snapped by the wind’s unforgiving force. Yet despite this, they refused to give up. Their heads continued to grow and turn toward the sun.  Even when broken, they didn’t wither. They adapted. They persisted. They rose.

That moment stayed with me.

When we gathered for The Expansion Experience this past January, this story felt like the perfect reflection of our theme:

Rooted. Resilient. Rising.

Just like the sunflower, we, too, are anchored by our roots—our values, our community, and the strength we cultivate from within. Our rootedness gives us the stability to withstand life’s storms.

When challenges come (as they always do), it’s our resilience that allows us to bend without breaking, to realign with our core, and to rise again, stronger and more determined.

And as we continue to rise, we stretch toward the light—pushing beyond our comfort zones, seeking growth, and aspiring to fulfill the highest vision for our lives.

The sunflower doesn’t question whether it’s worthy of the sun’s warmth. It simply turns toward it.

As I stand in front of a new patch of sunflowers this year—once again reaching, thriving, and reminding me of nature’s quiet wisdom—I can’t help but wonder:
