It Was Never About the Food

Yesterday I found myself thinking about a little Chinese restaurant in the tiny northeastern Arizona town where we once lived. It wasn't a fancy place. It was simply called China Cafe, and every Saturday after my young son's taekwondo class, our family would stop in for lunch.

Over time, the people there became much more than restaurant staff. They became part of the rhythm of our lives.

They knew what we ordered before we sat down. They laughed with us. They teased my husband because he always ordered the same thing ("You're so boring!")  With a smile and her wonderfully accented English, our favorite waitress would insist he should try something different because it was "Good for your healthy." To this day, I can't hear those words without smiling.

30+ years later, I don't remember their names. I don't remember what was on the menu or our favorite dish.   But I do remember their faces, their comments, and how they made us feel.

There was one day that has stayed with me for more than thirty years.

My husband had already moved to California ahead of us for work, and I was temporarily solo parenting our young children. I had become ill with the flu but still needed to feed us.

I called the restaurant and asked a simple favor.

"If I send my son in with the money, could someone meet him at the door and bring him our order?"

Without hesitation, she said yes.

When we pulled up, she was watching for us and recognized our car immediately.

I can still picture my 5-year old son, Mike, climbing out. He had the sweetest little blonde bowl haircut with soft waves. He held the money carefully in both hands, standing just a little taller because he felt like such a big boy.

She welcomed him inside as though he were family.

While they finished packing our food, she sat Mike at the counter next to her and the register, gave him a small bowl of soup and a cup of soda to enjoy. A few minutes later he walked back out proudly carrying our takeout box while she stood in the doorway waving goodbye and wishing me well.

It wasn't a grand gesture.   It was simply kindness.

Looking back, I realize that moment wasn't created in a single phone call. It was built over dozens of ordinary Saturdays. Friendly conversations. Shared laughter. Familiar faces. Small moments repeated over time until strangers quietly became people who cared about one another.

Relationships take shape through a series of moments, usually ordinary moments that don't seem all that important at the time.

In a world that often feels rushed and transactional, perhaps the greatest gift we can offer one another is simply to become present enough to know people beyond the surface.   The family-owned business team of China Cafe was exemplary at this.

We can cultivate deeper relationships through simple, intentional actions, such as:

  • Choosing connection over transaction. Slow down long enough to see the person in front of you, not just the task at hand.
  • Becoming a familiar presence. Relationships grow through consistency. Showing up again and again builds trust in ways that grand gestures never can.
  • Looking for small ways to make someone's day easier. A thoughtful favor, a word of encouragement, or an unexpected act of kindness often leaves a lasting impression.
  • Creating moments people remember. Most meaningful memories aren't expensive or elaborate. They're made when someone feels genuinely welcomed, valued, or cared for.
  • Treating people like they matter. Whether it's a customer, coworker, neighbor, friend, or family member, every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel seen.

More than thirty years later, I don't remember what we ate that afternoon.   But I'll never forget how the family at China Cafe cared for us and made us feel like part of theirs.
