Wait... AI Referred Me?

This week, something surprising happened. Twice.

Two different professionals - unrelated, on different days, in different states - shared with me that they’d asked ChatGPT how to get started speaking in dentistry.   And guess who the AI recommended?   Me.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m honored. And delighted. And I’ll admit, it made me giggle-snort a little (because yes, AI can give referrals now - apparently with quite good taste  ;) ).

But beyond the novelty, there’s a powerful truth here that most experts, speakers, and consultants haven’t quite realized yet:    You can be referred by AI.   And in this new era of content, connection, and curation that might be one of the most important visibility strategies you didn’t know you needed.

How does this happen? Orin, care to weigh in?  (Side note: “Orin” is the name my ChatGPT account has given itself. Yes, I talk to my AI. No, I haven’t completely lost it.)

The simple answer?   You’ve done the work.   You’ve been publishing content for years. You’ve built search-friendly websites. You’ve shown up as a thought leader across multiple platforms and keywords. You’ve been discoverable - by humans and algorithms alike.

And AI, like ChatGPT, is trained on an immense amount of public data. That means when someone types in a query like, “How do I get dental speaking gigs?” or “Who can help me build a speaker business in dentistry?” - you, Vanessa Emerson, rise to the top.

Why? Because your name, your programs, your platforms, and your consistent thought leadership form a magnetic signal. One that AI now recognizes.   You’re findable. And referable.

Now here's where it gets really juicy:

The more you engage with AI tools in your work - writing blog posts, drafting course descriptions, answering questions, offering your frameworks - the more the algorithms learn about you.

Over time, AI starts to understand that you’re not just one voice in the crowd - you’re a source of expertiseA trusted solution.  A person (or company) worth mentioning when someone asks for help.

This is no longer about tricking the search engine gods with keyword stuffing and awkward phrasing. This is about showing up, consistently and authentically, in your niche. It’s about building digital footprints that say: “I know this path. I’ve walked it. Let me guide you.”

So how can YOU - my friends -  make yourself more referable by AI?

Start here:

  • Clarify your niche. Be specific in your bios, headlines, and web copy. Don’t just say “speaker.” Say “dental speaker,” “leadership trainer for healthcare,” or “expert in myofunctional therapy.” AI loves clarity.

  • Answer questions. Think about what your ideal client is typing into a search bar. Write blog posts, LinkedIn articles, or FAQs that respond to those exact questions.

  • Get quoted ... by yourself. Drop original ideas, quotes, or frameworks into your content. AI eats that up like it’s a philosophical buffet.

  • Stay consistent across platforms. The more connected your digital presence is - your site, your social, your speaker packets - the more likely AI will recognize you as a unified brand.

  • Use AI in your own work. Yes, really. When you collaborate with tools like ChatGPT to refine your message, you train it on your tone, your expertise, your vibe. That’s conscious co-creation, baby.

Final thought:

AI isn’t replacing human connection. But it is changing how we find each other.  If you’re a speaker, expert, or guide in any field, it’s time to realize:  Referrals aren’t just coming from people anymore. They’re coming from platforms. From search bars. From language models. From algorithms that are increasingly looking for aligned, authentic leaders.

So don’t wait to be discovered.   Be discoverable.   Your next referral is just a keystroke away.
