What We “Know” That Just Ain’t So
Aug 28, 2025
Mark Twain once said, “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” That line has been echoing in my mind since I heard it at this week’s Soul Service.
It’s probably not hard to see that I have personally struggled since last November’s federal election. I was raised in a far right-leaning community and some of my closest friends and family fully embrace MAGA ideals. “What is” has been deeply triggering for me. If you’ve followed my social posts, you’ve seen me wrestling out loud with what’s happening in America. I don’t apologize for that.
At the same time, I don’t lean far left either. I resonate with the purple middle and look forward to a day when an Independent candidate leads this nation.
Politics aside, I’ve come to see that my certainty about “how things should be” can prevent me from meeting “what is” with trust in the greater good at work beneath the chaos.
And what is? We are witnessing the unraveling of the constitution alongside the rise of authoritarian rule, blatant fascism, threats of martial law, the use of military force against American citizens, mass deportations without due process, and the stripping away of rights for women, LGBTQ+ communities, and more. Some call this a necessary unraveling before a great awakening. Maybe that’s true. But I don’t believe humanity must ride the wreckage all the way to rubble before we remember who we are. Pain might be a loud alarm clock, but awakening doesn’t require utter destruction. It only requires choice.
I’ve made a conscious commitment to my Self. When faced with “what is,” I will choose to…
- See what is happening without letting it spin me out of alignment.
- Stay connected to Source, to my dharma - rooted and unmoved by the storm
Instead of collapsing into fear or outrage, I’m choosing to channel my inner Spock and say, “Fascinating!” and pause. (I’ve found Star Trek brings me far more joy than watching mainstream news. Highly recommended. Start with Discovery.)
From there I might ask my Self: Is there something here for me? Is this outside of my control? What can I do to bring a positive outcome? How can I hold space for those affected? How can I use my voice to raise awareness?
In this pause, we have the opportunity to shift from spinning to choosing. From reaction to response. Not from avoidance, not from apathy, but from awareness.
With emotional regulation, we can hold our outrage without letting it gut us. We can face injustice with eyes wide open while staying rooted in Spirit. This is what awakening looks like: calm nervous system, grounded presence, compassion in action. In living this way, we invite others to join us.
Awakening is not a distant possibility. It is a right-now invitation. It begins when enough of us chooses to meet “what is” with open hearts and clarity, remembering that this collective moment is much bigger than politics. We are Spirit beings in human form. We are powerful co-creators. And this very turbulence can serve as the catalyst for a collective awakening, calling us to lean toward one another with greater empathy, deeper understanding, and fierce love.
Namaste, dear ones.
