What’s Your Dharma? (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Do you know your purpose?

Most of us answer that question reflexively... something about our work, our family, or a lifelong passion project. But deeper still lies a whisper. A nudge. A knowing.  That’s where Dharma lives.

Dharma (capital D) is a Sanskrit word that holds layers of meaning across ancient traditions. At its essence, Dharma is the truth of who you are as a soul. It’s your inner purpose.  To awaken. To become conscious. To remember that you are not the roles you play or the achievements you stack, but rather the presence behind it all.

dharma (little d) is how that soul-truth gets expressed in this human adventure. It’s your outer purpose - the unique way you serve, contribute, create, and connect. It’s your natural gifts, your passions, your particular brand of magic woven into how you show up in the world.

When both Dharma and dharma are aligned, life feels different. Your actions match your values. Your relationships shift. Your energy lifts. You feel like you’re home inside yourself.

So how do we get there? How do we “find” our purpose?

Here’s the twist: You don’t have to chase it. You already know it... at least parts of it. You’ve been living it, glimpsing it, and maybe even avoiding it for years.

One beautiful way to uncover your purpose is to look at the people who move you. Not the ones you want to copy, but the ones who stir something in your soul.

Ask yourself:

  • Who do I deeply admire?
  • What is it about them that resonates?
  • What qualities, values, or "special powers" do they embody?
  • What kind of impact do they leave behind?
  • This isn’t fan-girling. It’s soul-mirroring.

When you feel lit up by someone’s courage, creativity, wisdom, or compassion it’s not because you’re lacking those things. It’s because they’re already inside you, waiting for a microphone.

Your purpose is less about figuring things out and more about remembering.

Once you notice the themes (those qualities and impacts that repeat), you can “try them on” for yourself.

  • Who are you when you stop shrinking?
  • What power are you holding (or hiding) that’s meant to help others?
  • What legacy feels aligned with your essence not your ego?

When you weave those answers together, you may find a statement that surprises you by how deeply it feels like you.

Something like:

I am the Guide who uses heart-listening to awaken courage in others.
I am the Alchemist who uses insight to transform pain into growth.
I am the Connector who uses intuition to link people to their next chapter.

Whatever yours is, you’ll know. It hums with familiarity. It rings in your bones.

Living your D/dharma isn’t about being perfect.  It’s about being present. Being true. Being willing.

It’s not static. Your dharma will shift over time because you will. But your Dharma, that inner spacious presence? It’s been there all along, watching with love.

So today, I invite you to tune in.  Not to your to-do list. Not to your title. But to your truth.

Because when we live on purpose from the inside out we don’t just heal ourselves. We ripple that healing into the world.
